Desreta Jackson — Icon, Innovator & Cultural Vanguard
Desreta Jackson, born in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, rose to fame as young Celie in Spielberg’s The Color Purple. Her performance is celebrated in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. She went on to memorable roles in Sister Act and Mancuso FBI and produced an early reality show before the genre had a name.
Her contributions span far beyond entertainment. Honored with the Prestige Award, two MAC Awards, the Bulldog Award, and inclusion in the African American Film Encyclopedia, Jackson remains a touchstone of cinematic and cultural excellence.
As a force for community change, she invested over $1.1 million of her own funds into rebuilding Watts, Los Angeles—restoring homes, creating jobs, and supporting survivors of trauma through her enterprise, Mohogany Mane.
Her 2024 acquisition of the Goodman–Stark House in Missouri—a distinguished Queen Anne mansion listed on the National Register of Historic Places—is a rare achievement. With less than 3% of U.S. historic landmarks tied to African American heritage, her stewardship aligns her with national icons such as Villa Lewaro and the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House—a powerful act of legacy reclamation.
